Which Works Faster, Braces or Invisalign®?

With all the advancements in orthodontics, there are now more treatments options available than ever. While Invisalign is a popular choice for discreet orthodontic treatment, it’s not the best option for everyone. Those with mild to moderate cases are great candidates for clear aligners, but others require traditional braces to get their perfect smile. Our orthodontist in Reno, NV, explains the differences between braces and Invisalign below.

Invisalign or Braces?

Both treatment options are highly effective, but the best choice depends on your unique case and needs. Invisalign works best for mild to moderate cases and uses a series of customized plastic aligners that are nearly invisible, providing you with a more confident smile even throughout treatment.

On the other hand, traditional metal braces are the most common type of braces, as they are the tried-and-true method for straightening teeth, regardless of case severity. Metal braces are made of high-grade stainless steel and use brackets, small rubber bands, and archwires to straighten your teeth during the course of your treatment process. They have progressed a long way in the past decade and are more comfortable than ever before.

Treatment With Invisalign

With Invisalign, you can remove the aligners to brush, floss, and eat. You will follow a schedule of aligner changes that put increased pressure on your teeth over time. Invisalign can treat a broad range of dental and orthodontic conditions, including:

  • Overly crowded teeth
  • Widely spaced teeth
  • Crossbite
  • Overbite
  • Underbite

You wear each aligner for about one week, taking it out to eat, brush, and floss. As you replace each aligner with the next in the series, your teeth gradually move into their final alignment. You’ll visit our office approximately once every 8-12 weeks so we can check your progress and give you the next few aligners for your treatment. As you continue to wear the aligners, they gradually reposition and adjust your teeth into a radiant smile that you’ll be proud to show. Overall treatment time ranges from 12-18 months, depending on the severity of your case.

Treatment With Braces

Traditional metal braces are stronger and more resilient than ever before. Brackets adhere to your teeth with an archwire, which will appear straight when your treatment is complete. Modern brackets are smaller and less noticeable than in the past, and at D’Ascoli Orthodontics, there is never any headgear involved. The archwire running through the brackets is held on by colored bands, which can be customized based on your favorite color, sports team, or holiday. Overall treatment time varies depending on your case but averages 18-24 months.
